Why Choose Our Program
Over 20 Years Of Experience
My name is Darrin DeTorres and I am the head coach of the Ocala Distance Project. I have a lifelong passion for running. I got his start in elementary school with the Road Runners Club, running my first 5k in 3rd grade. I ran on and off until I entered high school, where things really took off. I went from the slowest freshman on the team to a captain of the squad by my junior year. I managed to earn a scholarship to run at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
My experience in the sport has spanned across all areas. While in college, I helped managed a very successful running store called the Jacksonville Running Company. While there, we were twice voted a top running store in the country. I have also organized multiple 5ks and have even had the opportunity to announce at multiple National Championship Track Meets. (NCAA, USATF Masters, USATF Junior Olympics)
I have been coaching for nearly 8 years. I started by helping at my former high school (Vanguard) while my brother was running on the team. As an assistant to one of the best high school coaches in the nation, James Travieso, I have had the opportunity to work with multiple state champions in both cross country and track. Kids in our high school program have earned scholarships to run at colleges all across the country.
The Ocala Distance Project has been a new venture for me. One of the parents in the high school program expressed that there were no programs for young distance runners in our area. That day I started the Ocala Distance Project. The program has grown from 5 athletes in the beginning to almost 30 athletes. Along the way we have produced multiple state qualifiers, and even a few state medalists.
We want to introduce a lifelong love of the sport of distance running. We strive to instill a work ethic that carries over into other aspects of the children’s lives. One of our motto’s is “We work hard, so winning comes easy.”
